The Challenges, Transformations and Rewards of Being a Professional Organiser

Cluttered and unorganised office space with piles of paperwork

As a professional declutterer and home organiser, I’m often asked what my typical day looks like.

The truth is, there isn’t one.

Every home is different. Every family is different. Every client has a different story and a different reason for asking for help.

Some clients are preparing to move after living in the same home for decades. Some are overwhelmed by years of accumulated belongings. Some are busy families who simply haven’t had time to keep on top of things. And sometimes life has been so difficult that looking after the home has understandably become the last thing on someone’s list.

That is one of the reasons I love my job so much.

At Decluttering Crew, we help people declutter, organise, downsize, pack, unpack and create homes that feel calmer, more functional and easier to enjoy. We work with clients in Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas, helping with everything from one room to entire homes.

Here are just a few examples of the very different projects I’ve been lucky enough to work on.

Please note: to protect our clients' privacy, we haven't included photos alongside each project in this post. We're working on launching a dedicated Portfolio section on the website, where you'll be able to see our transformations, room by room, with each client's permission. Keep an eye on our Recent Projects page for updates!

Downsizing After 30 Years: From a Seven Bedroom Family Home to a Retirement Flat

One particularly memorable project involved a client in Sevenoaks who was moving from her seven bedroom family home of 30 years into a retirement flat.

This wasn’t simply a house move. It was a major life transition.

Thirty years in one home meant three decades of family memories and a lifetime of belongings. Every room contained possessions that had accumulated over the years, and deciding what would make the move to a much smaller property was understandably emotional.

We helped with the entire process, including decluttering, making decisions about what to keep, packing, moving and finally unpacking and organising the new flat.

The challenge was finding the right balance between practicality and sentimentality.

Downsizing doesn’t mean getting rid of everything that has meaning. It means carefully deciding what is important enough to take into the next chapter.

Once we had reduced the volume of belongings, we could focus on packing and preparing for the move. Then came one of my favourite parts: unpacking and organising the new home so that it was practical, comfortable and easy to live in from day one.

The reward was enormous.

Seeing my client move from a seven-bedroom house full of memories into a beautifully organised retirement flat was incredibly satisfying. What could have been an overwhelming experience became a manageable transition, and her new home was ready for her to enjoy.

Our reviews have included: "I have no hesitation in awarding the Decluttering Crew five stars for their efficient and sensitive handling of my removal from house to flat."

Helping a London Client Reclaim a Home That Had Become Overwhelming

Another project involved a client who had lived in a London flat for more than 30 years.

Over that time, an enormous amount of belongings had accumulated. The client wanted to sell the property but was unable to market it in its existing condition.

This was a large project, but the physical decluttering wasn’t actually the biggest challenge.

The most important part was building trust.

When someone has lived with their belongings for decades, those possessions can represent memories, security and comfort. It is not our job to walk into someone’s home, judge them or simply throw things away.

My role was to listen, understand and work alongside the client at a pace that felt right for them.

Trust had to come first.

We worked carefully through the flat, making decisions together. There were difficult moments, but slowly the space began to emerge.

The most rewarding part was seeing the transformation and knowing that the client was finally able to take the next step towards selling the property.

This project was a powerful reminder that professional decluttering is about far more than getting rid of things. Sometimes it is about helping someone feel supported enough to begin a process that has felt impossible for years.

One client said: "It's tricky to have a stranger in your home, seeing your most personal things... but she made it so easy and I'm entirely grateful."

Decluttering a Busy Family Home With Three Teenagers

Family homes present a completely different challenge!

This project involved a busy family with three teenagers and all the chaos that comes with family life.

When everyone has school, work, activities, friends and busy schedules, the house can quickly become the place where everything lands.

Clothes get left in bedrooms. School paperwork piles up. Cupboards become storage spaces for things no one knows what to do with. Items are moved from one room to another without ever really finding a proper home.

I think many families can relate to that.

The aim wasn’t to create a home that looked like a showroom. It was to create practical systems that worked for a real, busy family.

Organisation has to be realistic.

A beautifully organised cupboard is useless if the system is too complicated for anyone to maintain. The best systems are simple, practical and easy for the whole family to use.

The reward was seeing the difference that a little more order made to everyday life.

When everyone knows where things belong, the home becomes easier to manage. Finding things takes less time. Rooms are easier to use. There is less visual chaos and, hopefully, a little less family stress!

An organised family home doesn’t have to be perfect. It simply has to work for the people living in it.

A review I loved was: "She also taught my daughter simple systems to help her stay on top of everything..."

When Life Gets in the Way

One of the projects that has stayed with me involved a client who had experienced a huge amount of trauma over several years.

Her home had gradually become overwhelming.

And this is something I think is incredibly important to talk about.

When life becomes difficult, our homes are often one of the first things we let slip.

If you are dealing with trauma, grief, stress or a major life event, sorting cupboards and keeping on top of the laundry is probably not your priority. Sometimes just getting through the day can take all of your energy.

Then, over time, the jobs build up.

What was once a little bit of clutter can start to feel impossible to tackle. And unfortunately, the more overwhelming it becomes, the harder it can feel to ask for help.

My approach is always completely non judgemental.

A cluttered house does not define the person living in it. Often, there is a story behind why a home has become difficult to manage.

We started slowly and broke everything down into manageable steps. There was no pressure to do everything at once.

The transformation was about much more than an organised home.

It was about helping to create a space that felt calmer, more manageable and easier to live in. After everything this client had been through, it was wonderful to know that her home could once again feel like a place of comfort rather than another source of stress.

This is the kind of job that provides huge satisfaction. Not just because of the physical transformation, but because of the difference the space can make to someone’s everyday life.

As one client put it: "Alix is calm, practical and totally non-judgemental, but also keeps you moving."

The Garage Makeover That Became a 50th Birthday Surprise

Not every project is emotionally challenging.

Some are just great fun!

One of my favourite projects involved a garage clear out and organisation as a surprise 50th birthday present.

The client’s wife had apparently been complaining about the state of the garage for years, so he decided that the perfect birthday gift would be to finally sort it out!

It was such a thoughtful and unusual present.

The challenge, of course, was keeping it a surprise and completing the transformation in time. We cleared out the garage, sorted through everything and organised the items that were staying so the space could actually be used and enjoyed.

And what a difference it made.

The finished garage was organised, functional and easy to navigate no more digging through piles of forgotten belongings to find something at the back.

The reward was knowing that the transformation was a complete surprise.

It also reminded me that getting organised can be a wonderful gift. You don’t always have to give someone more stuff. Sometimes giving them space, time and a more functional home can be far more meaningful.

Our reviews have included: "What had become nothing more than a dumping ground is now a fully functioning, organised space that we can actually use."

Why an Organised Home Can Make Such a Difference

Across all of these projects, the circumstances were completely different.

But the result was similar.

  • A calmer home.

  • More space.

  • Less overwhelm.

  • The joy of being able to enjoy your home again.

There is something incredibly satisfying about walking into a room and knowing where everything is. Opening a cupboard and being able to find what you need. Having a garage that you can actually walk into. Moving into a new home that has been organised properly from the beginning.

Organisation can make everyday life easier in ways that are often underestimated.

It can save time, reduce frustration and make it easier to maintain your home. It can create more usable space and, most importantly, help people feel more relaxed in the place where they spend so much of their lives.

Of course, an organised home isn’t about perfection.

Homes are there to be lived in.

Life gets busy. Families create mess. Things accumulate. That is completely normal.

The goal is simply to create systems that work for you and your lifestyle, making it easier to restore order when things do get a little chaotic.

One client said: "Thanks to her expertise, everything now has its place and is so much easier to find."

Why I Love Being a Professional Declutterer

I genuinely love my job.

I love the variety of projects. I love meeting new people. I love problem solving and finding ways to make a space work better.

But most of all, I love the job satisfaction.

Every project is different, and every transformation has a story behind it.

I have helped clients move on to the next chapter of their lives. I have helped people tackle homes that have felt overwhelming for years. I have helped busy families create more manageable spaces. And I have even helped create a memorable 50th birthday surprise!

There is nothing better than standing back at the end of a project and seeing the difference.

But my favourite moment is often seeing the client’s reaction.

Sometimes it’s relief.

Sometimes it’s excitement.

Sometimes it’s simply being able to breathe and say, “I can’t believe how different it feels.”

That is why I love what I do.

Decluttering and organising isn’t just about creating a tidy home.

It’s about making life easier.

It’s about creating space.

It’s about reducing stress.

And sometimes, it is about helping people feel happy in their homes again.
